Public Safety Chair Endorses Lori Saldaña for Congress

Praises Lori’s Political Courage

A leading LGBT lawmaker and Chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety has announced that he is endorsing Lori Saldaña in her run to represent the people of the 52nd Congressional District.

Tom Ammiano, a civil rights leader, San Francisco Supervisor and State Assemblymember, served with Saldaña in the State Legislature where they collaborated on a number of policy issues, including a landmark gun-control bill.

Ammiano said he had been impressed by Saldaña’s political courage.

“I have seen Lori stand up to some powerful special interests – including the gun lobby–and win!,” he said. “California needs Lori’s fearlessness and determination in Washington.”

Saldaña is running in the newly-drawn 52nd Congressional District that includes La Jolla, Poway, Clairemont, Pacific Beach, Point Loma and Coronado.

Ammiano, along with Harvey Milk, founded the successful ‘No on 6 ‘movement to defeat the Briggs Initiative, a measure that would have banned gay men and women from the teaching profession in California. He noted that Lori has an impeccable record in support civil rights legislation, including marriage equality.

“Lori has been a steadfast ally in the fight for LGBT equality in California as well as a powerful and effective voice for Progressive Democratic values,” he said.

Ammiano’s support adds to Saldaña’s growing list of endorsements by leading elected officials that includes Congresswoman and Former Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, State Treasurer John Chiang, State Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, State Senator Mark Leno. Saldaña has also been endorsed by the Point Loma Democratic Club, the San Diego Democratic Women’s Club and the Black Mountain Democratic Club.
